Last week I wrote about my experience in South Africa, which started in 1992 and was the first milestone of a life of discoveries in many lands…
Being a hotelier is a real privilege : not only you get to meet all kinds of people, provide them with -hopefully at least!- pleasurable experiences, cater for some of the world’s famous events (Cumbre de Rio in Peru in 2003 for example, which brought together 19 Latin American presidents in Cusco and Lima), sometimes taking part in the country’s history (standing in line for South African first open elections on 27th of April 1994), travel extensively, get to know extremely diverse cultures, but you also get paid for it all!
Granted, it isn’t fun every day, and like in any human enterprise, conflicts abound… in fact you probably spend more than 50% 80% of your days trying to find solutions to them, whether with guests or your staff, or most often both at the same time!
Hotel operations are similar anywhere in the world, so for those who want to travel, it’s a very small world…
My almost 3 years in South Africa confirmed, if I had any doubt about it, that I was made for this way of life : a free observer of the world!
Next destination was to be Mexico, if my dream was to be an international hotelier I needed to speak Spanish..
